Lucknow which is known as the City of Nawabs is famous for its culture and handicrafts all over the world. Although, after the Zamindari abolition, the grandeur is now no more but the descendants of Nawabs have succeeded in preserving their identity. One such descendant of Nawab is Begum Naseema Raza wife of Mr Syed Masoom
Raza (Advocate), who resides in Saltanat Manzil, Hamid Road, Opp. City Station, Lucknow. She is the great-granddaughter of Khan Bahadur Nawab Syed Hamid Hussain Khan (O.B.E., M.B.E.) and the daughter of Late Nawab Syed Raza Hasan Khan. Her uncle Professor Syed Ali Hamid is Professor of the English Department in Kumaun University, Almora (Uttarakhand).
Begum Naseema Raza is very fond of preserving various articles of her family belongings to the Nawabi era. One such unique, rare and invaluable collection is of Paandan which she has inherited from her father Late Nawab Raza Hasan Khan (founder of Playway High School, Near City Station, Lucknow). Chewing paans and offering them to guests was part of Lucknavi culture and associated with this was the collections of Paandans and Khaasdans. The Begums use to prepare paans from the Paandans and place them in Khaasdans to be offered by Nawab Saheb to his guests.
Paandans are of various shapes and sizes and are made of different metals like silver, copper, brass etc.
The priceless collection of Paandans and Khaasdans which Saltanat Manzil can boast of is an about 100 yrs. old silver Paandan and Khaasdan with exquisite filigree work which is unmatched. There are Paandans which were collected down the line in various shapes and sizes e.g. some are hexagonal in shape, rectangular, oblong, mount shaped etc. as regard sizes, some are so small that they can be carried in hand while other are big. The same can be said about the Khaasdans which are made in silver and can be said to be examples of master craftsmanship. On seeing such collection of Paandans and Khaasdans at one place strengthens our belief that there are some Royal Households in Lucknow, who are doing their utmost to preserve their culture and heritage.
Begum Naseema Raza has received support in her endeavour from her husband Mr.Syed Masoom Raza (Advocate) & her mother Begum Gulzar Hasan who have supported her at every step.
