Under the changed leadership of Professor P.C Joshi as the Vice-Chancellor and Professor Balram Pani as the Dean of Colleges, the University of Delhi, the elephant (its insignia), has resumed its as usual style of functioning if we watch its speed of promotions of assistant professors in various colleges. Barely, over a fortnight more than 600 odd assistant professors have been promoted covering more than a dozen departments, and spreading over 24-25 colleges and various departments of the University. The colleges are: Aditi Mahavidyalaya, BCAS, DR, Rajadhani, Hansraj, IP, Bhagini Nivedita, RLA, Moti Lal Nehru Day and Evening, Deshbandhu, Venkateshwara, Kamla Nehru, Gargi, SGND Khalsa, SGTB Khalsa, Maharaja Agrasen, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Miranda, Hindu, Swami Shraddhanand, Satyawati College Day, Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Acharya Narendra Dev, Deen Dayal Upadhyay College. This has sent a positive signal across the academia.

Around 3000 teachers stagnated and were at a huge financial loss who could not be promoted for over 15 years owing to lack of decision making at the apex level in the university. It was unprecedented in this university which has historically been leader in all aspects of teaching-learning including formulation and implementation of Career Advancement Schemes (CAS) right from 1982, the first CAS. The cases of eligible teachers for promotion were not being processed for the last 15 years which caused uncertainty and general gloom resulting into de-motivating the faculties across the university.

Professor Balram Pani, Dean of Colleges, University of Delhi said, the assistant professors who have been promoted in the present phase are for stage I and II, while in the next phase promotion for associate professors and Professors would be covered.

Prof Ajay K Bahgi, former Executive Council Member and President of National Democratic Teachers Front expressed satisfaction over the University adopting the advice of NDTF in following a decentralized approach while sending statutory experts for ongoing promotion process and also urged all the fellow colleagues in various colleges and departments of the university to remain active to get the promotion process completed in a record time. He also exuded confidence that as soon as promotions of this phase are completed, the process of promotions for associate professors and professors would be initiated.

Dr R.N.Kaar, Principal, Shyam Lal College said that the promotion process is very smooth which includes online process wherever required. In SLC, out of around 40 eligible teachers 29 have already promoted from pay level 11 to 12. i.e. from stage I to II. Likewise, in Rajdhani College all but one out of 49 eligible teachers have been promoted from pay level 11 to 12.
